Why Do We Expect Ourselves To Be Perfect?

We often expect ourselves to be perfect due to societal pressures, cultural influences, and personal beliefs. From a young age, we’re bombarded with images of flawless individuals in the media, leading us to believe perfection is the standard. Also, our internal drive for success and validation can contribute to unrealistic expectations of ourselves.

About 12 years ago my life was very stressful. Everything I did had to be perfect. Every aspect of my life had to be managed exactly right. After a couple of sessions with my life coach, I realized I had a problem; perfectionism. It took a few years to embrace imperfection truly but even the first few things I let go of drastically lowered the level of stress in my life. Sometimes we are so caught up trying to control everything about ourselves and about our lives that we don’t realize that we have a problem.

All I can say is that 12 years later my life is mostly imperfect and that is truly ok with me. I have less stress and more time to enjoy what I love. I can breathe, I can sleep, I can walk around with pride knowing that I am doing what I can. And if it isn’t perfect, it is sincerely ok with me. But again, embracing imperfection was a hard and challenging time in my life, but very much worth it!

Why is it Hard to Embrace Imperfection?

See, embracing our flaws can be challenging for several reasons. Firstly, there’s a fear of judgment or rejection from others. We worry that if we show our imperfections, we’ll be perceived as weak or inadequate. Secondly, we may have internalized negative messages about our worth, leading us to believe that our flaws define us. Finally, there’s a natural desire for self-improvement, and acknowledging our flaws can feel like a setback in our journey toward becoming our best selves.

However, it’s important to recognize that perfection is an impossible standard. Embracing our flaws doesn’t mean giving up on growth or striving for excellence. Instead, it’s about accepting ourselves as we are, recognizing that our imperfections make us human, and finding beauty in our uniqueness. We can cultivate greater self-compassion, resilience, and authenticity by embracing our flaws.

This is going to be tough, but worth it.

Embrace Imperfection: Follow these steps on your journey of embracing imperfection:

Self-Reflection: Take some time to reflect on how perfectionism has affected your life. Consider situations where you’ve felt pressure to be perfect, and how this has impacted your emotions and behavior.

Identify Perfectionist Tendencies: Identify areas of your life where you tend to exhibit perfectionist tendencies. This could be in your work, relationships, personal goals, or self-image.

Challenge perfectionist thoughts as they arise. When you catch yourself striving for perfection, remind yourself that it’s okay to be imperfect and that mistakes are a natural part of learning and growth.

Practice self-compassion by treating yourself with kindness and understanding, especially when you make mistakes or fall short of your expectations. Remind yourself that you are human and deserving of love and acceptance.

Celebrate Imperfections: Make a list of your unique qualities, quirks, and imperfections that make you who you are. Embrace these qualities and celebrate them as part of what makes you uniquely you.

Let Go of Comparison: Release the urge to compare yourself to others. Remember that everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and that comparing yourself to others only undermines your self-worth.

Use positive affirmations to reinforce self-acceptance and self-love. Repeat affirmations such as “I am worthy just as I am” or “I embrace my imperfections with love and compassion.”

Practice Gratitude: Cultivate gratitude for yourself and your journey. Take time each day to acknowledge and appreciate the progress you’ve made, no matter how small.

Reflect on Your Progress: At the end of each day, take a few moments to reflect on your progress in embracing imperfection. Notice any shifts in your mindset and how this has influenced your overall well-being.

Remember that embracing imperfection is an ongoing journey, and it’s okay to have setbacks along the way. Keep practicing self-compassion and celebrating your unique qualities as you continue to grow and evolve.
