The Dreaded Fitness Plateau

Picture this: You've been putting in the effort, sweating it out at the gym, and eating your veggies just like your meal plan says to do. Everything seems perfect until, bam, month three hits, and it's like your progress has gone on vacation without you. The scale refuses to budge, and you can't help but wonder why, after putting in so much work and effort, you are stuck.

Sound familiar?

Don't Throw in the Towel

Now, it might be tempting to dive into a tub of ice cream or skip your workouts while you contemplate life's mysteries. But here's the deal: doing that will just add to your stress, and we're all about smashing those stressors.

And let's be real, changing your lifestyle isn't free. You're investing your precious time (those 45-60 minutes of workouts) and even your hard-earned cash on healthier food, supplements, and maybe even some nutrition and exercise coaching.

Why Plateaus Happen

Your body is a clever machine. Remember when running that first mile felt like climbing Mount Everest? But you persisted, and guess what? It got easier. Your body adapted, and that's the root of the plateau problem. Your body keeps adapting to this new lifestyle. More weights? Go it. Run faster? Done. Your body is amazing!

Breaking the Fitness Plateau Curse

So, how do we escape this fitness plateau curse? When one of my clients hits a small plateau, there are a few things I look at first. But first, I like to remind them that in order to keep seeing results, we need to learn to rest, not quit. You won't get closer to your goals if you give up or sabotage yourself by eating junk food or skipping workouts. On the contrary, it can ruin all the hard work you've been doing.

Mix It Up:

Your body craves variety. Switch up your workouts—change the frequency and duration to give it a wake-up call.

For example, if you have been walking on the treadmill at 3.5 mph and at a level 1 incline 4 days a week, change the speed or incline.

You can either change the incline to level 3 and keep the speed at 3.5 mph, or you can keep doing your original speed and incline level two days a week and do a faster and higher level on the other two days.

If you are lifting weights (read this article on why women should lift weights), go heavier, or keep the same weights but do an extra set or a few extra reps.

Set Your Sights:

Clear goals are your North Star. Small weekly and monthly goals add up to your big-picture success. If you've already set your goals, it’s time to revise them. The person you were three months ago when you started on your goals is not the same person you are today.

Maybe you have already lost 10 pounds, or maybe you have added lean muscle mass to your body. Set newer, updated goals to reflect your new starting point.

The plan that worked for you three months ago won’t work for the new you. This is exciting! This means that your transformation is underway, and it’s time to appreciate the hard work you have done so far and get ready for what’s to come!

Food Fuel:

As you make progress, your body's needs change. Make sure your eating habits keep up. Take a look at your macro breakdowns. You may have started a meal plan that was designed for the person you used to be.

It’s time to add better fuel to your fire. Do you need more protein, carbs, or fats? Or do you need more calories for your day? Do you need fewer simple carbs and more complex carbs? Do you need different supplements?

Again, I’m here if you have questions!
