It’s a no from me: I won’t push my clients to work through pain. I don’t subscribe to the ‘No Pain, No Gain’ mentality. Why? Because we’ve completely misunderstood that quote.

Physical Pain – Listening to Your Body Cues

It’s normal to feel sore, and maybe even experience some pain after workouts. This is to be expected. That’s why you should take a day or two off between sessions to recover and rebuild your muscles.

But it’s not okay to ignore your body’s pain during workouts and push through it. Pain is your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong.

If you experience shoulder pain in the middle of presses, you should either reduce the weight or take a break.

It’s crucial to figure out why your shoulder is hurting. Is it tightness? Soreness? Something more serious?

With corrective exercises, we address these issues before diving into heavy-duty workouts. We want to ensure you can perform at your best without risking injuries.

Mental Pain – Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone

When people hear the phrase ‘No Pain, No Gain,’ they often think it means pushing through physical discomfort during a workout. But let’s shift our focus to a different kind of pain: the discomfort of stepping out of your comfort zone.

Leaving your comfort zone is challenging. It’s the place where you feel safe and at ease, surrounded by the familiar. But growth doesn’t happen in comfort.

To truly evolve, whether in fitness, business, or personal development, you need to experience a bit of discomfort.

Think about it this way: the ‘pain’ of leaving your comfort zone is not physical pain but rather the fear and uncertainty of trying something new. This could be starting a new workout routine, launching a business, or even speaking in public for the first time.

The initial steps are often the hardest because they force you to confront your fears and doubts.

But this discomfort is crucial for growth. When you push past it, you discover strengths and abilities you didn’t know you had. The discomfort of trying something new is temporary, but the rewards of personal growth and achievement are long-lasting.

For instance, when you first start a new fitness program, it might be intimidating. You might worry about not being able to keep up or fear judgment from others.

But as you continue, your confidence grows, your skills improve, and what once seemed impossible becomes a new norm.

The same goes for other areas of life. Taking that leap of faith, whether it’s a career change or pursuing a passion project, can be terrifying. But by embracing the discomfort and pushing through it, you open doors to new opportunities and personal growth.

The ‘No Pain, No Gain’ mantra, when applied to stepping out of your comfort zone, means embracing the fear and uncertainty that come with change.

It’s about understanding that the initial discomfort is a necessary part of the journey toward achieving your goals.

So next time you find yourself hesitating to take that first step, remember that a little discomfort is a sign that you’re on the right path. Embrace it, push through it, and watch as you grow and achieve things you never thought possible.
