Starting a new fitness program can be overwhelming, especially if you’re new to exercise or haven’t been active in a while. Or maybe you think you don’t have enough time to follow your workout plan or stick to your meal plan. I know from experience just how crazy things can get.

Here are a few tips to help you avoid overwhelm when following a fitness program:

Start small

Start with a manageable routine that you can stick to, and gradually increase the difficulty as you get used to the program. I used to think that if I didn’t have 45 minutes to work out then why bother? But now I know better. After all 15 minutes is better than nothing. Not only that, those 15 minutes will start changing your energy levels a little at a time. So work smart with whatever amount of time you have.

Set realistic goals

Set goals that are achievable and realistic for you. Maybe you can’t meal prep for the entire week, but you can prep your ingredients, drinks, and supplements. Maybe you can’t workout 5 days a week but you can 3 days. Whatever goal you have for yourself, make sure it’s something you can actually achieve.

Focus on progress, not perfection

Remember that progress takes time, and it’s okay to make mistakes along the way. Did you cut out a few take-out dinners this month? That’s progress! Did you wake up a few minutes earlier than usual this week? That’s progress! Did you lose a pound or two? That’s progress! Recognize your progress, celebrate it, and keep going.

Find an accountability partner

Find a friend or family member who can support and encourage you along the way. Join my Facebook group and find a buddy. We are all there for the same reason. When you follow a fitness program with a partner, you see better results.

Listen to your body

Pay attention to how your body feels during and after exercise, and stop if you experience any pain or discomfort. Allow your body to rest in between lifting sessions and cardio sessions. Also, if something is hurting make sure to pay attention to your form and/or talk to a doctor if the pain persists.

Be flexible

Don’t be afraid to make adjustments to your routine if it’s not working for you. I’m always around if you have any questions. Maybe you don’t have time for a full body workout but want to know how to make the best out of your 20-minute break – I can help you find the best workout plan for you.

Seek guidance from a professional

Working with a qualified professional such as a personal trainer or physical therapist can help you stay on track and ensure that you are performing exercises correctly and safely. Every fitness goal and every person requires a personalized plan. Do not follow some random video or pin if you have a specific plan. If you are exercising just to stay active, then yes, YouTube and Pinterest are great places to get inspiration and ideas from. But if you are trying to lose weight, tone up, or reach a specific goal, contact me first!

Enjoy it

Make sure to find an activity that you enjoy. If you are not enjoying the activity, it’s likely that you will not stick to it. When I lost 25 pounds earlier this year, I tried different cardio activities. The ones I liked the most were walking and dancing. So I stuck to those on a daily basis. Even when I didn’t feel like it, I still had a great workout. Make sure to find a few activities you like.

It’s important to remember that everyone’s fitness journey is different and what works for one person may not work for another. Find what works for you, and don’t be afraid to make adjustments along the way. Let me know how I can help – the first session/consultation is free!

I hope these tips help you start your fitness journey and continue even if you hit a few bumps.
